Of those, 17.9 million have been diagnosed, with 5.7 million undiagnosed and living without knowledge of their condition. An additional 54 million are believed to have pre-diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are elevated above normal and leading towards full-blown type 2 diabetes.
